The
Adoption Process
Thinking of adding a new family member? Our adoption process is designed to place our rescue dogs with loving homes ensuring you and your new pet are a good fit!
Adoption Information
We require potential adopters to fill out an adoption application and be approved prior to meeting the dog.
-
Step 1
Complete a free application at the link below. If you are interested in applying for a specific dog on our website, please be sure to list their names on your application. If you are not ready to select a specific dog, please still submit your application and write in the notes what type of dog you think you’d be interested in. Please note that submitting an application is the first step in our process and does not guarantee adoption of a particular dog.
Please Note: Based on our years of rescue experience, we have found that it is in the best interest of both our dogs and our rescue to generally not consider applications from households with children under the age of 4.We have found that adoptions into homes with very young children are more likely to result in the dog being returned. These returns are heartbreaking for the dogs and can make it more difficult to find them permanent homes in the future. Our goal is to make the best possible match for both our dogs and their adoptive families, giving every adoption the greatest chance of lasting a lifetime.
This policy was not adopted lightly. It reflects what we have learned through years of rescue work and our commitment to making placement decisions that are in the best interest of the dogs in our care.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

Step 2
You will be contacted via email by a Red Barn Rescue volunteer adoption screener to acknowledge your application. They will conduct any required checks, including a vet check to ensure your pets are up to date on medical needs, a landlord check if you rent, and coordinate a home visit if needed. They may also contact you with questions or to further discuss your needs, preferences and lifestyle as you look for a new family member.
-
Step 3
If approved to adopt the dog are interested in or pre-approved and matched with some animals from which to choose, the application screening volunteer will forward your application to our director who will contact you for a meet and greet. In the case of a dog who is in a foster home, the visit will need to be coordinated with the foster. All adoption decisions have final approval by Red Barn Rescue’s director.
-
Step 4
At the time of adoption, the following adoption fees will be required, as well as a leash, ID tag, collar. Our adoption fee reflects what we invest to get dogs healthy and ready for adoption. Adopters are expected to cover future vet visits and keep pets up to date on heartworm/flea preventatives and vaccines. (We require that our rescue receives the dog back if you can no longer care for them.)

- For puppies less than 1 year of age, the adoption fee is $350.
